Sonia Norris is a Toronto-based director, teacher, coach, writer and theatre-maker.
She has directed over 30 devised ensemble and solo productions as well as numerous contemporary and classical productions. Teaching, coaching, directing and devising have taken Sonia around the world working with theatre companies, circus artists, opera singers and professional training programs including the Stratford Festival, Cirque du Soleil, Disney Productions, Birmingham Conservatory of Classical Training, Stellenbosch University South Africa, National Theatre School of Canada, Dell’Arte School of Physical Theatre, Young Africa Centre Zimbabwe, as well as universities and colleges across North America.
In November 2014, she was a Guest Presenter at California State University Northridge and Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, as an International Specialist in Mask Theatre presenting workshops in Mask Theatre & Le Jeu and lecturing on her work using mask theatre as a tool for empowerment in marginalized global communities.
As a teacher and coach, Sonia is dedicated to the empowerment of performers within the creation process. She has developed a dynamic physical approach to directing and training performers that physically and imaginatively provokes the performer to new levels of engagement and risk.
Sonia is a graduate of the Playhouse Acting School, holds an MFA in Directing from York University and has trained in physical theatre and theatre creation at Ecole Jacques Lecoq in Paris, Ecole Philippe Gaulier in Paris and London, and the Dell’Arte Int’l School of Physical Theatre in Blue Lake California.
